Mountains of research demonstrate that a diversity of skilled STEM-trained women are absent from leadership positions in academia, industry and government. Despite recent efforts at improving diversity equity and inclusion, many women who have worked in STEM have accepted that this is just the way it is and that they will have “to work twice as hard to get half as far” as their male counterparts.
Lori Lennon, founder and CEO of Thinkubator Media, was determined to level the playing field, providing a platform and programs that support women in science in a holistic and meaningful way. She created Thinkubator Media to promote a business philosophy that lifts women and doesn’t try to force them into a male mold or traditional model of success. This desire to make a change was further cemented by the conversations she had with clients about the needs and challenges women in science truly experience.
This was the impetus and genesis of Thinkubator Media.
There are five core values that we build into all of Thinkubator processes and programs. We attempt to instill them in our clients and their organizations as well. The core values are:
Leaders of an organization once commented that they offer many opportunities for women to take leadership roles on key research projects. Yet, women in their organization rarely step up and volunteer themselves, so these roles end up being taken by men. This kind of language continues to place the burden on women who, as we’ve already established, have a many barriers to overcome already.
Organizations and companies need to stop asking women to conform to the male molds society have constructed to measure success, power, and advancement. Different types of “molds” can net the same success if you consider the person rather than defaulting to the “it’s always been done this way” approach.
With this frame of mind, and the support of organizations like Thinkubator Media, women help advance themselves and spend more time doing the work to which they’ve dedicated their careers.
